Patan City and Tibetan Handicrafts Centre
Patan, also known as Lalitpur-the city of fine art and architecture,is said to be one of the oldest and most beautiful medieval cities of the world.The artists and artisan have created great and many beautiful temples,shrines and palaces in the Durbar Square.This is a wondrous place. Tibetan Handicrafts Centre,established in 1959 for the Tibetan refugees,is now a Handicraft Centre managed and run by the Tibetans on a co-operative basis.Here,one can witness the making of Tibetan carpets.there are many authentic Tibetan items of choice in the show rooms.
Dakshinkali:
A very famous Hindu Goddess Kali temple is situated 22km south of kathmandu.The entire route to the temple is a beautiful countryside drive.Regular religious ceremonies are performed daily.Twice a week,on Tuesday and Saturdays,a large number of animals are scarified.More incredible animal rituals are held during the Dashain festival.On the return journey yu can visit the temple of Shes Narayan,a cave temple where Guru Padmasambhava is said to have gained his physical power through meditation.
Kirtipur:
Standing atop a small hill,Kritipur is a picturesque town .The town was first established in the 12th century.It later became an independent kingdom and the last stronghold of the Mallas.A 16th century temple of Bagh Bhairawa is interesting because of swords and shields fixed in the front of the temple.Other interesting temples are Uma Maheswor and Chilancho Stupa,believed to have been built by Ashok.
Budhanilkantha:
Budhanilkantha,situated about eight kilometers north of Kathmandu,at the base of Shivapuri hill,is a remarkable place.There is a colossal statue of Lord Vishnu,recycling of Lichhavi period.This fifth century statue in the middle of a small pond seems to be floating in water.A short walk for an hour up to Nage Gompa,a monastery for nuns,gives one a good view of Kathmandu valley.
Bungamati:
Bungamati lies five kilometers south of Patan.A typical Buddhist Newar village is tightly clustered against a hilly riverside slope surrounded by terraced rice fields.A paved stone path leads to a gate guarded by two lions and the head of a third one.Here is the powerful Shikara style Rato Machhenra Nath temple with heavy columns and beautiful supports at its lower part.
Khokana:
At a twenty minute walk towards Karya Binayak from Bungamati is lovated the village of Khokana -famous for manufacturing mustard oil.Ith si worthwhile to seek out one of the vilage's oil presses,located in poorly lighted factories with medieval atmosphere.
Sankhu and Bajrajogini:
Here,a hill encircles the ancient settlement of Sankhu.Once the city was one of the trade routes towards east of Helambu to Tibet.It is a typical Newari town with many fine old buildings and temples.Forest above the village hides an important temple of the Tantric goddess Bajra Jogini.The mani structure is from the 17th century,but Nepalese legend says that the goddess has resided here since pre-medieval time.
Changunarayan:
The temple of Changunarayan,built on an hilltop,dates back to the 4th century,is the oldest temple in Kathmandu Valley.In the courtyard, among dozen of Vishnu statues,a 5th century image with 10 arms,is a masterpiece.There is also an image of Garuda,the mythical bird that serves as Vishnu's heavenly vehicle.Besides ,there is one of the oldest and most important Lichhavi inscriptions of the valley,which is the oldest and first written record found in the Kathmandu Valley.
