One of the best things about a river trip is how little you need: all you need is a pair of shorts and a thermal top. Many companies supply light waterproof nylon 'paddle jackets' and if the river or weather is likely to be cold then they may also provides wet suits, and thick thermal tops.

Take old comfortable clothes and gear that you don't mind getting lost, damaged and wet. Leave valuable likes passports, credit cards, travellers cheques, air tickets etc, back at your hotel. Rafting agencies also provide you the safe deposit facility.
Cotton clothing is really pleasant for hot sunny days but is cold when wet. Wool keeps warm even when wet. Modern thermal fleece, pile, or similar polypro are quick drying and ideal wear for cool days in the river, often worn under a pair of shorts.
